Vipassana – A Small Introduction

Vipassana is the science of the subconscious mind. It is the art that brings happiness, peace, and joy to our life. In Vipassana, we go into the depths of our subconscious mind and eliminate its impurities from the root. To do this, we base the sensations arising on our body.

Firstly, through practice, we make the mind so sharp that it can feel the subtle sensations arising on the body. Then, observing those sensations without any reaction, one by one eliminates all the impurities of the mind.

In this article, you will be given complete information about the 10 day Vipassana Course and at the same time, I will also share my experience of this course.

My Center For Vipassana Course

While applying for the course, I chose Jaipur Vipassana Meditation Center (Dhamma Thali) as my desired center. A few days later, I was informed by email that I had been selected for the Vipassana Course. A few days later, I was also informed by phone. I was very excited about this course.

Why did I choose Jaipur for the course?

Details Of Vipassana Course

On the call for Vipassana Course, we have to reach the center a day before the course starts. On this day, the formalities (registration, accommodation, etc.) are completed here. After that, we are gathered in the conference hall and are given information about Vipassana. The rules and timetable of the center are explained.

After this, we are brought to the Meditation Hall. All are allotted their seats in the hall. During the whole course, we have to practice sitting in our seats. Before entering the hall, the rules and timetable of the center apply to us. The Course starts from here.

The most important thing about this course is that whatever practice we have to do, we are told about it a day before, before the end of the day.

Day “0” Of Vipassana Course

This is our first day at the center. Day “0” starts after the completion of the formalities of the center. We are given instructions in S.N. Goenka’s voice. On day “0” we are given Anapana for practice. In Anapana meditation we have to focus on our incoming and outgoing breathing. The day ends after 15 minutes of practice. We go to our room and relax.

My Experience Of Day “0”

It was one of the special days of my life. I came here and considered myself lucky. The practice was good for 15 minutes. I was very tired. I fell asleep as soon as I came into the room.

That’s how my Day “0” ended.

Day “1” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

On day 1, we have to practice Anapana all day. We have to pay attention to our incoming and outgoing breath. But this is not easy to do. Our mind wanders again and again. The mind has to be brought back to breathe every time.

By practicing the Anapana, we get to know the versatility of our mind. Our mind is so fickle that it does not stay in one place.

My Experience Of Day “1”

My mind kept wandering from my breath again and again. Even after a lot of effort, even for 10 to 15 seconds, I was not able to focus my attention on my breath. My mind was wandering again and again in the past and future. I was also angry at myself that my mind was so fickle that it could not hold my attention in one place even for a while.

I was feeling pity on seeing this versatility in my mind. After the meal, when I was resting (between 11 am to 1 pm), I promised myself that now I will focus my attention on my breath. But this could not happen.

I had some success in the midday meditation (2:30 pm to 3:30 pm). Now I was able to hold my mind for 10 to 15 seconds. But this success could not last long. Even after all my efforts, when I could not concentrate my mind on my breath, I left my mind behind it. I gave up everything and let my mind go accordingly.

But the question was coming to my mind again and again that today is the first day. If this is the situation on the first day, then how will the next days pass. I was angry and longing for this weakness of my mind. But S.N. Goenka’s discourse in the evening dispelled all my doubts.

He told in his discourse that every person’s mind is fickle. Even 10 to 15 seconds a person’s mind does not stay in one place. Upon hearing this, I breathed a sigh of relief.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • What is Vipassana?
  • History of Vipassana.
  • How to work hard to learn Vipassana.
  • What is Anapana?
  • Importance of Anapana.
  • The versatility of the mind.
  • Vipassana Vs Other meditations.
  • What is Dhamma?
  • Nature of the impurities of the subconscious mind.
  • How does Vipassana change the nature of the mind?
  • The next day practice.

The following day’s practice was given after the Discourse. The day ended after a bit of practice. I went to my room.

Day “2” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

In this method of Anapana, we have to focus on our breath, as well as to see which part of the nose is being touched by the breath. Through this method, we sharpen our mind even more. This practice goes on all day.

My Experience Of Day “2”

The day started well. In the morning practice, the mind wandered but it was not disturbed. As the day passed, a volcano erupted in my mind. After one breath, I was unable to adjust the mind even on the second breath. This was a very disturbing situation in my life.

In the morning group meditation, I was thinking of leaving the hall. I did not feel like sitting in the hall even for a moment. There was a terrible pain in my legs too. My mind was unable to focus on the breath, on the other hand, there was a pain in the legs. I stopped focusing on the breath and let the mind wander. Now, I was doing something else, not Anapana.

I slept after lunch. When I sat in the afternoon group meditation, my mind was calm. I was able to focus a little on my breath. And it was also felt that which part of the nose is being touched by breath.

It was a moment of relief for me. For some time, I was able to focus my mind. I found it a great success. But like yesterday, this success did not last long. Unbearable pain started in my legs, mind started wandering again and again. This continued throughout the group’s meditation. I could not concentrate on my breath. Now I started waiting for the group meditation to end.

When I was walking in the evening after the tea break, I was reminded of my family again and again. The question was repeatedly in my mind that am I doing right? Should I meet the teacher and explain my problem? I decided that in the Question Hour, I will meet the teacher and tell him my problem.

The condition of the group meditation in the evening was even worse. It was difficult to pass a second. I stopped meditating and started waiting for the question hour.

S.N. Goenka’s video discourse started after the group meditation. Got to learn a lot by listening.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • The versatility of the mind.
  • Strength and weakness of the mind.
  • What is pure Dhamma?
  • What is Liberation?
  • Difference between Reality and Imagination.
  • A small story of Gautam Buddha.
  • Another small story of Gautam Buddha.
  • The reality of body and mind.
  • Impurities of mind.

The following day’s practice was given after the discourse. The day ended after meditating for a while.

Now the time had come for me that I was waiting for. I stayed in the meditation hall and waited for my turn to meet the teacher. I was at number three. Dhamma Sevak called me. Here is the talk between me and the teacher:

Teacher: Yes.

Me: I am not able to.

Teacher: Explain in detail.

Me: My mind does not stay at all. I cannot focus even 10 seconds on my breath.

Teacher: There is nothing to panic about in this. This is what happens with everyone. If your mind wanders, then bring it back to your breath.

Me: I’m trying But again and again the mind wanders.

Teacher: Keep practicing by strengthening your mind. You have come here to learn Vipassana. Difficulties arise. You have to complete the Vipassana Course while going through difficulties. When the mind wanders, bring the mind back to breathe without being disturbed.

Me: Even after trying, again and again, I could not.

Teacher: It happens to everyone. Now you go and meditate by making your mind strong. Tomorrow is important.

I come back to my room. My mind was still disturbed. Can’t even remember when I fell asleep.

Day “3” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

On this day, as a practice, we have to focus on the sensations arising from the upper lip to the nose. No matter what kind of sensation is, it has to be observed with equanimity. At first, there is difficulty in making the mind feel the sensations, but after regular practice, it starts to feel the sensations.

My Experience Of Day “3”

The bell rang at four in the morning. I woke up with a very heavy heart. It may have happened because of yesterday’s events. In the morning meditation, I focused the mind from the upper lip to the nose. I was not feeling any sensations. I put my focus on the breath and put it back on the sensations, but still did not get success. But even after the failures, the mind was calm.

In the morning group meditation (8:00 am to 9:00 am), my mind started feeling little sensations. There was a slight tingling feeling around the nose. Today, my focus had increased slightly compared to yesterday. Just the pain of the legs was giving some trouble.

After lunch, my concentration in afternoon group meditation increased a bit more. Now my mind was able to feel the sensations a little better. It was a completely new experience for me. Every moment a new sensation was arising. By the time he focused on any one sensation, it would have changed, and then a new sensation would have started.

My mind was starting to stay now. Just the pain of the feet was hurting. I was opening my leg in a while. After the end of the group meditation, I was happy that my mind was now able to focus a little better.

Conversely, my focus in the evening group meditation (7 pm to 8 pm) disappeared. My mind started wandering again. In the afternoon, the mind which was feeling sensations easily, the same mind was not able to feel anything now.

But now I started to understand the game of my mind. I started to understand that I do not have to get distracted by any movement of the mind and keep doing my work. I have to accept the truth and move forward on this path. Overall, my mind wandered completely in the evening group meditation. But I did not let my mind get distracted.

After group meditation, S.N. Goenka’s video discourse on Vipassana began.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • More information on Vipassana.
  • What is Shila?
  • What is Samadhi?
  • What is Panya?
  • Difference between belief and truth.
  • A funny story.
  • Importance of Dhamma.
  • What is the Ultimate Truth?
  • Next day practice.

After the discourse, meditation was practiced for a while and then the day ended. I went to my room. Today my mind was calm and happy. I was happy that I did not make any mistake by joining the 10 day Vipassana Course. I was on the right track.

Day “4” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

This is the most important day of the 10 Day Vipassana Course. On this day we learn vipassana. We learn how the impurities hidden in our subconscious mind are seen as the sensations arising on the body.

After regular practice in the morning, we are taught Vipassana in the afternoon. This is slightly different from the previous three and a half days of practice. The practice given in the last three and a half days is to make our mind sharp. This sharpness of the mind is used for practicing Vipassana.

Instructions are given in S.N. Goenka’s voice and we have to follow those instructions. In Vipassana, we have to focus on the whole body parts one by one. We have to see what sensations are arising on those parts of the body. As soon as sensation is felt on any part of the body, we have to focus on the next part of the body.

This practice starts from the fourth day and runs till the end of the 10 Days Vipassana Course.

Sensations arising on the body during 10 days Vipassana Course.
Body Sensations During Vipassana Meditation

My Experience Of Day “4”

This day was full of difficulties and challenges for me. Today the precious gem in the form of Vipassana was given to us. I was very excited. S.N. Goenka’s instructions ( audio voice) for Vipassana lasted for about 1 hour. I kept doing as he instructed.

To be honest, I did not feel any kind of sensation in this session today. I followed S.N. Goenka’s instructions completely. I did not feel the sensations even after fully focusing on every part of the body. This made my mind upset.

The evening group meditation was neither good nor bad. But there was less distraction in the mind than the rest of the days. Though the mind was wandering but it was not disturbed.

S.N. Goenka had said in his instructions that if there is no sensation on any part of the body, then concentrate on your breath and keep moving forward. I also resorted to this technique.

The group meditation ended and S.N. Goenka’s discourse started.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • Importance of 10 day Vipassana Course.
  • A detailed explanation of Vipassana.
  • Relation of the impurities  of the mind to the sensations of the body.
  • What is Equanimity?
  • A funny story.
  • How does Vipassana help in Liberation?
  • Structure of mind.

There was a little practice of Vipassana after the discourse. After that, we all went to our room. The fourth day of the Vipassana Course ended.

Day “5” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

Now we have to do Vipassana every day. S.N. Goenka’s instructions go on for a while, then we have to practice Vipassana by ourselves.

My  Experience Of Day “5”

Morning practice was futile. The mind was unable to concentrate at all. Was wandering here and there again and again. Nevertheless, I continued my practice. But there was no success.

Mind was focused on morning group meditation (8:00 am to 9:00 am). Sensations were felt on some parts of the body and not on some. But I maintained the equanimity of mind. Whether the sensations are felt or not, the mind should be in equanimity, this is called Vipassana. Although I have lost a lot of times, but this group meditation was good.

Today’s lunch was very good. When I was resting after having lunch, many kinds of questions related to Vipassana were arising in my mind. I decided that I would meet the teacher today to get answers to my questions.

In the afternoon group meditation, my mind felt the sensations more well. Sensations were felt on almost every part of the body. This was a good sign. I looked at those sensations with equanimity. Sometimes even the equanimity went away, but the mind did not get distraught. In this way, this group meditation ended.

In the evening when I was walking after the tea break, good thoughts were coming to my mind. I was happy that I was getting good results from my penance.

Mind did a better job in the evening’s group meditation. Now I was able to feel the sensations completely. I was looking at all the different sensations from head to toe with equanimity.

S.N. Goenka’s discourses on Vipassana started after group meditation.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • What is Meditation?
  • How do impurities of the mind come out in the form of body sensations?
  • Why is Equanimity is so important for Vipassana?
  • Why do we stay distraught?
  • Science and Vipassana.
  • Next day practice.

After the end of the discourse, Vipassana was practiced for a while and after that, the day was over.

Day “6” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

On this day, we also have to practice Vipassana in reverse order. First, from the head to the feet, then from the feet to the head, sensations arising in every part of the body have to be felt with equanimity. This practice goes on all day.

My Experience Of Day “6”

This day was better than yesterday. Every day I was making progress on the path of Vipassana. There were some difficulties in the morning practice. But my practice in the morning group meditation was very good. From head to toe, then from toe to head, I was feeling sensations in every part of the body. I kept watching those sensations with equanimity.

There was a pain in the legs. But I focused all my attention on the sensations. Sensations were felt at all parts like nose, ears, throat, chest, stomach, hands, fingers, feet, etc. I put all my focus on seeing those sensations with equanimity. This was my best practice so far.

Even in the afternoon group meditation (2:30 pm to 3:30 pm), the mind did not stray too much. The mind was feeling the sensations with equanimity. Earlier, it used to take some time for the mind to feel the sensations, but now within a few moments, there was a feeling of sensations on every part of the body. This group meditation was also very good.

In the evening group meditation, the mind started to feel the sensations at such a rapid pace, as if it were some space rocket. Within 1 second, the sensations started to be felt. Sensations were felt all over the body. It seemed that my body was just vibrations. The solidness of the body was not felt.

Since this experience was completely new to me, it was a little difficult to keep the mind in equanimity. I was feeling those sensations with fun. This meant that I was not doing Vipassana. The group meditation ended and S.N. Goenka’s video discourse started.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • What is real learning?
  • What is real teaching?
  • A funny but meaningful story.
  • What is impermanent?
  • What is permanent?
  • How does Vipassana destroy impurities of the mind?
  • Enemies of the mind.
  • Friends of the mind.

We practiced Vipassana for some time after the discourse and went to our allocated rooms.

Day 6 of 10 day Vipassana Course ended.

Day “7” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

This day is different. Today, students are provided Shunyagaar (cells) for practice. It is like a very small room. Vipassana is practiced in this small room. Old students are given Shunyagaar on the third or fourth day of commencement of the 10 day Vipassana Course. We have to do group meditation only in Dhamma Hall (Meditation Hall). If we want to practice for the rest of the time, we can use the cells.

My Experience Of Day “7”

Now I was maturing into Vipassana Meditation. The mind was easily able to feel the sensations. I just had to take care of Equanimity.

I was happy when Shunyagaar was given to me. I was glad that something new will be seen. For 7 days, following the same routine at the same place, there was a dullness in my mind. By the way, dullness is also one of the impurities of the mind.

My cell number was 43. I went to my cell. It was a dark room of about 7 x 4 square feet. I started practicing Vipassana. It was a very good practice here. In Dhamma Hall ( Meditation Hall ), there was a little bit of mind wandering, but here, there was a complete focus on sensations.

The experience of evening group meditation is unspeakable. Just as the mind began to feel the sensation, a strange sensation started in the whole body. I was feeling the same kind of sensation all over the body. It seemed as if there is no body, only waves. The solidness of the body was completely lost. I did not even know how that time of group meditation passed. Even after the group meditation ended, I was feeling the sensations.

S.N. Goenka’s Video discourse on Vipassana started after the group meditation.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • Importance of next two days of 10 day Vipassana Course.
  • Benefits of Vipassana Meditation.
  • Why should we do Vipassana daily?
  • Difference between Rituals and Vipassana.
  • Explanation of GOD.
  • Explanation of Dhamma.
  • Properties of Dhamma.
  • Benefits of being aware.

Meditation was practiced after the discourse and then we all went to our rooms.

Day 7 of 10 day Vipassana Course ended

Day “8” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

So far, the students who have come to the 10 day Vipassana Course get completely immersed in the atmosphere of the center. There are only 3 days left at the end of the course. By the practice of continuous Vipassana Meditation, almost all the students start feeling sensations. We just have to take care of our equanimity of the mind.

My Experience Of Day “8”

This 10 day Vipassana Course was explaining a lot about me. In the first 3 days, I got to know my mind. After learning Vipassana Meditation, I got the privilege of knowing the impurities hidden in the subconscious mind.

During meditation in the morning, my focus was wandering a bit. But after a little effort, I got control of my mind and completely put myself to feel the sensations. The pain in my legs was also over now. How the time of meditation passed, was not known.

What happened in the afternoon group meditation is indescribable. As soon as I started Vipassana with S.N. Goenka’s instructions, I felt a strange sensation on the upper part of my head. It felt like something was moving around that place  (like a circle). This was a completely new sensation. I focused all my attention on the upper part of the head. How it was cannot be described. After a while, I moved forward. Now that sensation had spread all over the body. The body was not known at all. I fully maintained the equanimity of the mind.

It was a wonderful experience. I decided that I would tell the teacher about it. I started waiting for the question hour of the night.

In the evening group meditation, I started wishing for that sensation. I focused my mind on every part of the body, but that sensation was not found. My mind started craving for that sensation. I had lost the equanimity of my mind. I felt pity and I was increasing it further.

Like every day, S.N. Goenka’s discourse started after the group meditation.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • How to do Vipassana properly.
  • Information about Gautam Buddha.
  • How to progress in Vipassana?
  • How to go from gross to shuttle step by step.
  • Why should we observe the sensations with equanimity?
  • What is Sankhara?
  • Brief information about rebirth.
  • The scientific reason for the impurities of the mind.

We practiced Vipassana after the discourse. I changed my mind to meet the teacher and ask questions. I got an answer to my questions in S.N. Goenka’s discourse. I went to my room.

Day 8 of 10 day Vipassana Course ended.

Day “9” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

As we get closer to the end of this 10 day Vipassana Course, our mind would go a little quieter, steady and sharp. By the ninth day, almost every student becomes proficient in the art of observing sensations. There is only one challenge before us and that is to set the mind in equanimity. It takes some time.

My Experience Of Day “9”

On this day I found that my mind is no longer running behind the sensations. No matter what kind of sensation my mind was looking at those sensations with equanimity. In between, the mind was a bit distracted, but it also calmed itself down. Now I started to understand this game of mind. There was no problem in meditation now.

Every practice of this day has been very good for me. It is natural for the mind to wander. Even after the mind wanders, it is important to maintain equanimity. My mind was now being set in equanimity.

Today’s discourse of S.N. Goenka was important after the evening group meditation. In this, S.N. Goenka gave very important pieces of information related to Vipassana.

Important Points Of S.N. Goenka’s Discourse:
  • How to know whether our practice is going in the right direction or not?
  • Benefits of practicing Vipassana every day.
  • How to use Vipassana in daily life?
  • A good and meaningful story of Vipassana Meditators.
  • What qualities are needed to get liberated?

Listening to S.N. Goenka’s discourse raised respect for Vipassana. After practicing Vipassana for a while, we all went to our rooms.

Day 9 of 10 day Vipassana Course ended.

Day “10” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

This is the last day of the 10 day of Vipassana Course. Our noble silence breaks after morning practice. We can talk to each other and share our experiences. But it is not allowed to talk in the Dhamma Hall (meditation hall).

There is a fair of books and CDs related to Vipassana in the registration hall. We can buy those books and CDs to know about Vipassana in more detail. The daily routine remains the same, only noble silence is broken.

My Experience Of Day “10”

It was a mixed day for me. On the one hand, I was happy to get precious meditation technique like Vipassana, on the other hand, I was also sad that today is my last day here.

I bought a book written on Vipassana. The full history of Vipassana was told in this book. Information related to S.N. Goenka’s life was also in this book.

All the practices were good on this day. The group meditation of the evening was also very good. Today was the last discourse of S.N. Goenka. He discussed very important things.

Day 10 of 10 day Vipassana Course ended.

Day “11” Of 10 Day Vipassana Course

This is the day of the end of the 10 day of the Vipassana Course. The course ends after morning practice. Students leave for their homes at their convenience.
My train was from Jaipur to Mumbai in the morning of 11:30. A Bus facility was provided to go from the center to Jaipur station. I took that facility.

My Thoughts About The 10 Day Vipassana Course

I see the 10 days spent during the Vipassana Course as one of the best days of my life. I can understand my mind because of Vipassana. I am eliminating the impurities of my mind one by one and am growing on the path of liberation.

Conclusion

Vipassana is like a precious gem. This ancient technique of India was completely extinct. We should thank Gautam Buddha for rediscovering this technique.

To learn Vipassana, it is mandatory to take a 10 day residential Vipassana Course. We can apply for Vipassana Course on its official website. Other courses of Vipassana are also conducted at Vipassana Centers.

During the Vipassana Course, we have to strictly follow the rules and routines here. For the first 3 days of the course, we have to practice Anapana so that our mind can be subtle and sharp.

The practice of Vipassana starts from the fourth day of the course. In this, we look at the subtle sensations arising on the body with equanimity. When the hidden impurities of the mind come to our body in the form of sensations, then they are instantly destroyed on observing them with equanimity. This practice lasts until the end of the course.

There are difficulties during the course which we have to face with patience. During the course, it is permissible to discuss with the Dhamma Sevaks for information related to the arrangements. We can ask the teacher if we have practice-related questions.

If you also want to get rid of the impurities of the mind (anger, greed, jealousy, etc.), then definitely join this 10 day Vipassana Course.
